Weekly Worship, Continual Service

Lewis Place Part 2

There was an action packed weekend for the 6:08 people last weekend.  Not only did we celebrate the Risen Lord, but we served people in two locations on Saturday.  We did custodial work at the Oasis Food Pantry, keeping the place tidy for the people that volunteer there and those that need help.  We also went back to Lewis Place with a small team to do some dry wall, fix a floor and finish up the porch.  While we were there KMOV TV came and did a follow up report for the 2010 New Years Eve tornado and took some video of 6:08 in action.    Here is a link to the report:  Local Church Aids Neighborhood Ravaged by Twister

There are many service opportunities we are going to Joplin in May.  There is a service day on the 14th of April for Youth in Need.  Join us for worship each Sunday at 6:08 pm and stop by the service table, you never know who you can serve.

608 Service Goal Update

Cleaning up.

When the 6:08 woship service was launched we had a goal of performing 608 hours of service.  Service is help to our neighbors, who could be anyone and anywhere.  As a worship community we have worked at Oasis Food Pantry, CASA, Church of the Shepherd, Lewis Place, Joplin and for people who are nameless but have a need.  We are being literally the hands and feet of Jesus Christ.

Remember our goal, 608 hours of service.  Well as of March 25th we as a worship community have served about 260 hours.  Wow, in 3 short months we are 43% of the way to our stated goal!

A short prayer.

Dear God, thank you for the people that you have lead to be in service with you.  Thank you for the people that serve and the people who recieve the service.  Help us to continue to be your hands and feet.  Help us to see you in the people that are served and help those who recieve service see you through us.

In Christ’s name we pray.  Amen.

Cleaning @ Oasis

A super 6:08 group made short order of cleaning the OASIS Food Pantry building on Saturday (3-3)!  Thanks Dianna, Stacey, Kris, Mike, Jacob, Larry, and Steve.  Glad we could help OASIS out.  They do so much to give so many hope in our community! We will be there to clean up again on April 7.  Want to join the “6:08 OASIS Cleaning Crew”?  Let me know by commenting on this blog entry or signing up at the 6:08 service table on Sunday evening.

It’s March!

Welcome to the March Everyone!

2012 is “marching” right along and so is “6:08 at COS!”  Hang on, cause we are just getting started!  It’s exciting to be a part the newest worshiping congregation here at Church of the Shepherd!

If you haven’t worshiped with us yet, let me invite you to join us this Sunday, at 6:08 p.m. We are in week two of our Lenten sermon series called “Final Words.” This week’s final words from the cross are “I promise you that today you will be in paradise with me,” (Luke 23:43, GNB). We’ll discover what Jesus’ driving passion was and what that has to do with us.  We are looking forward to seeing you!

Last call for our March “Service Saturday! On March 10 we’ll be leaving COS parking lot at 8:30 a.m. and going to the Lewis Place neighborhood in St. Louis. We’ll return by 4:00 p.m. (if you need to return earlier you will need to drive your own vehicle). We’ll be helping some homeowners in this historically significant African American neighborhood continue to repair/rebuild after the New Year’s Eve 2010 tornado. Work will include rebuilding a porch floor and steps, hanging sheet rock, painting, laying sub-flooring, yard/gardening work…something for everyone! Lunch will be provided so we need an accurate count of how many will be going. You can sign up by this Sunday at the 6:08 service table, on our Facebook page, or by sending me an email. Get someone new connected to “6:08″ by inviting them to come along with you. Hope you can join us for an exciting opportunity to help transform our city by finding and offering hope…6:08 style!

You can join the “6:08 at COS” conversation on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/groups/608atCOS/). Stay up-to-date with 6:08 news and events.  Invite others to follow us as well.

In Christ’s Hope.

Change?

How have you used your change?  Did it change you too?  Remember the video “Change for a Dollar” and Pastor Steve’s sermon?

Here is a short story about using change to help someone.   My boys have this knack for bringing home boys that need some help.  It could be a good role model, good meal, a safe place or just a place to hang.  They met this troubled young man and of course he ended up at our house.  He was being taken advantage of by his “family” for a variety of things.  Finally his “Step Mother” kicked him out of the house.  We here in St. Charles County are really blessed with some great agencies, Joaquim and Ann Care service, Youth in Need, Oaisis Food pantry just to name a few.  The J&A Care Service helped this man out, got him a safe place to stay, helped with SSI and got him enrolled in other services.  But as of last week he had only $4 dollars for the rest of the month.  So that bag of change that we were given for the Sometimes a Little is a lot sermon went to good use.  With some extra change and the original $1.47 that was in the bag this young man got $3.15.  The next day he told us that he spent the money to wash his clothes.  That does not seem like much, but being clean and in clean clothing can really change your outlook on things.  Sometimes a little is a lot!

Sometimes A Little is a Lot

We were all reminded last week at “6:08 at COS” that sometimes a little is a lot!  Pastor Steve’s sermon reminded us how Jesus fed the 5000.  We also saw the video “Change For A Dollar” .  At the end of the service we were each given a bag of change to use to impact someone’s life in a positive way.  Don’t forget to report back this week or next.  We want to hear how you’ve helped change a life…maybe even yours!

Don’t forget that money isn’t the only thing that changes lives.  Our service, no matter how small has a greater impact than we will know.  Don’t forget to sign up for the service day on March 10.  If you have performed service, return your completed service forms each week.

In Christ.

Large Group Service Saturday: March 10

Looking for an opportunity to serve with others from “6:08?”  Be sure to mark your calendars for our next “Service Saturday” on March 10.

We’ll leave COS at 8:30 a.m. to go to the Lewis Place neighborhood in St. Louis to help residents repair their homes from damage suffered in the December 31, 2010 tornado. Most homeowners in this historically significant African American neighborhood were under insured and the $ 1,000,000 in aid promised by the city and state has yet to come through.

You can sign up to be a part of our March Service Saturday, by commenting here, or emailing Kevin Shepherd (shepkh@yahoo.com).

More details soon on this exciting opportunity to help transform our city by finding and offering hope…6:08 style!

Small Gift, Huge Impact

Have you ever received a small gift that made a huge impact in your life?  Or on the flip side of that, have you ever done something nice for someone that was no big deal to you, but it ending up being a real big deal for them?  Sometimes a little is a lot!  This Sunday, February 19, we’re going to take a look at “When a little is a lot.”  Hope you can join us at 6:08 p.m.

Sorting Food For Oasis

The Big Game!  We hope you have had some time to recover from Super Sunday evening.  Our “6:08 at COS” Souper Bowl Bash” was a real success: good crowd, good food, good game, good worship experience, and a good time of “hands-on” service!  We had 91 people in attendance, with a some new faces and several COS people who got a taste of 6:08 worship for the first time!  Thanks so much to Gene Lowther for pulling the food part of the evening off in grand fashion!  What a “Chili” night!  Thanks to everyone else for jumping in and helping where you were needed!

If you have not attended a 6:08 service, what’s keeping you?  Come join us each Sunday at 6:08 pm for worship.  Coming up on March 10 is a service day.  So mark the day on your calendar.  Details will be coming soon.

God thinks Big, shouldn’t you?
