Holy Baptism Holy Baptism is a Covenant between an individual and God. It is God's word to us, proclaiming our adoption by grace and our word to God, promising our response of faith and love.
Church of the Shepherd welcomes your inquiry about the Sacrament of Baptism and we look forward to assisting your family with planning this special day. It is our desire to make your baptism a most memorable occasion.
Persons of all ages can be baptized at Church of the Shepherd. Non-members are encouraged to seek membership as soon as possible after being baptized. We baptize by sprinkling Holy Water and make the sign of the cross on the forehead to invite the presence of the Holy Spirit.
Requirements for Worship Service Baptism You must meet with a pastor one time prior to your baptism date. This is so the pastor can meet the candidate for baptism and explain to the candidate (or the parents) the importance of this sacrament.
Baptism during Worship At Church of the Shepherd, we perform baptisms based upon pastor availability, not a specific schedule. Inquire for dates available.
At these Baptism worship services, there may be more than one child or adult being baptized at the same service. While we may have multiple baptisms, each baptism is performed individually with supporting family and friends gathered together at the baptismal font. A special baptism service for confirmation students only will be held on Confirmation Sunday of any given year.
Renewal of Baptismal Vows The United Methodist Church does not re-baptize persons that have previously been baptized (either in the UMC or other denominations). We believe God got it right the first time! However, if you have had a recent experience of justifying and pardoning grace, where you feel your life has been changed by the powerful workings of the Holy Spirit, and you would like to make a public re-affirmation of your faith, Church of the Shepherd would gladly renew your Baptismal vows. These Covenant Renewal services take place at the same times as baptisms throughout the year (see timing above). While you would not be re-baptized, the community would celebrate this moment of grace in your life.
